Finally, the long-awaited A S Club-Paithan Link Road was opened for the traffic on Saturday. The riders of different vehicles had a smooth ride on the new road. The Mahavitaran today gave power connection for the traffic signal at the A S Club Chowk which will help streamline the traffic. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation removed the barricades on the road in the morning and the road was thrown open for the public.
Due to Lok Sabha election model code of conduct, the opening was held in a very simple way. The work for 4.41-km road that links Aurangabad-Ahmednagar and Aurangabad-Paithan roads had begun last year. A bridge has been constructed on the Kham river and the road is four-lane. The road dividers have also been put. This will help streamline the traffic and reduce the chances of accidents. The final work to paint the signs is in process. Earlier, the vehicles coming from Nashik, Pune and Nagar had to turn from Nagar Naka and Baba Petrol Pump to go towards Beed, Jalna and Nagpur. Now, they will face no such hassles. LT published a report on May 10 that the signal at the chowk was not getting power connection. Following this report, Mahavitaran accepted the deposit amount from Cidco and gave a connection. News-LT

In a hurriedly called meeting this morning, the standing committee passed its ambitious yet controversial Sewage Upgradation and Development Project (SUDP) of Rs 464 crore. Its original cost was pegged at Rs 365.69 crore.
Taking advantage of the partial relaxation in the code of conduct given by the Election Commission of India (ECI), standing committee members were intimated about today's meeting through mobile phone calls and SMSes. The meeting started at 10 am sharp and ended at 10.30 am.
At the outset, members Vikas Jain, Sameer Rajurkar, Jagdish Sidh, Mir Hidayat Ali, Surendra Kulkarni, Parveen Qaiser Khan, Firdaus Fatema, Neelatai Jagtap, Urmila Chitte, Savita Ghadamode, Prajakta Rajput and Satyabhama Shinde raised queries about the project. Preeti Totla and Agha Khan were absent. City engineer S D Panzade represented the municipal commissioner in the meeting, which was also attended by deputy commissioner (Cidco) Kishore Borde, executive engineer (B&C and Sewage Project) Afsar Siddiqui and municipal secretary Pramod Khobragade.
Since the project is to be implemented, executed and commissioned in three years, members raised doubts about its deadline and sought to know how much it would burden the civic body and details like appointment of competent authority etc. Replying their queries, Panzade said that the present sewage network was designed three decades ago and it has become outdated. "We are incurring huge expenses on its maintenance. The sooner we get the SUDP completed, the better it will be," he said adding that the AMC will be appointing one independent executive engineer to monitor the project, ensure quality work and meet the deadline.  He also convinced them that the AMC would not be burdened by the increase in the project cost as 50 per cent of the difference amount would be released by the State Government and the remaining 50 per cent by the AMC. Considering the urgency of the sewage upgrdation project, chairman Narayan Kuche passed it. In a shocking incident, a suitcase containing two revolvers, four magazines and 24 live cartridges was found abandoned in a nullah on the eve of the Republic Day. The incident came to light at 10 am on Saturday when a 10-year-old rag-picker Ganesh Raju Waghmare was collecting trash under Fazilpura bridge. He noticed a black suitcase in the nullah and curiously opened it. He saw a book in it and when he took out the book, a revolver came out from it. Shocked and frightened, the boy started screaming and ran away from the spot.
His screams drew attention of Sandeep Chandne and his friends who were passing by. They all rushed to help the boy but were also shocked to find two revolvers and live bullets in the suitcase.
They tried to inform commissioner of police Sanjay Kumar about it, but could not succeed so they contacted the police control. After getting a message from the control room, police inspector Vijay Sonavne, assistant inspector Gajanan Kalyankar of the City Chowk police station, along with their team, reached the spot. They found two foreign made revolvers –- one 9-mm and one 0.32 mm, 24 live bullets wrapped in a handkerchief and four magazines, in the suitcase. Since the bag was found partially drowned in drain water, the police believe that it must have been thrown from the bridge by illegal weapon dealers.
The City Chowk police have registered a case in this matter. Top police officials and ATS police teams are looking into the case.
Needle of suspicion at weapon smugglers
Police sources believe that the arrest of the attackers of Narendra Dabholkar of Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti must have created panic among weapon smugglers and fearing arrest, some of them might have thrown the suitcase from the bridge. Meanwhile, it is also being discussed that some anti-national organisations might have abandoned the suitcase to spread terror on the eve of the Republic Day. In a dramatic operation, the Local Body Tax (LBT) department of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (LBT) today raided Bafna Jewellers showroom on Jalna Road. The raid reminded one of a scene from the feature film Special 26 in which a CBI teams raids a jewellery shop. The municipal team barged into the showroom, creating sensation among the staff members. However, it had to leave midway as it was not fully prepared. The AMC team comprising 15 to 16 officers had been in the showroom for two to three hours. The showroom manager and the civic team were engaged in a heated verbal duel over the legality of the municipal team's action.
The team comprising deputy municipal commissioner Suresh Pedgaonkar, Sanjay Pawar and others reached the showroom during the lunch hours. Pravin Nahar and three other employees were present. As the team began counting the gold and silver ornaments, the employees contacted their bosses. Corporator Prashant Desarda immediately rushed to the spot and demanded that the civic team should complete legal formalities before proceeding further. As the civic team did not have all legal documents, members returned abandoning the action.
The team issued a notice 15 minutes before initiating action whereas the norms stipulate that the notice must be given 7 days in advance. Moreover, a new ordinance issued in this regard recently stated that the authorities will have to obtain nod from secretary of the urban development department before initiating action. Even the municipal commissioner does not have rights to authorise the raid. The norms say that if any trader has evaded LBT by importing excess goods than disclosed, the civic team should check its returns and inform the secretary about the findings seeking permission for the raid. The SC has set guidelines for raids on the jewellery shops. News-LT
