In a raging inferno, a petrol pump of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), near Jafar Gate in Mondha, was gutted on Thursday at 3 pm. There was no casualty, but few vehicles parked on the premises went into flames, causing a loss of lakhs of rupees. The cause of the devastating fire was mystery till late evening. However, the petrol pump manager, Shaikh Amin Shaikh Azijullah (55), said that the fire might have occurred due to short circuit. Petrol was being filled at the pump from the tanker as well as six sample cans each filled with 6 litres of petrol were being checked. At the same time spark from an electric wiring fell on the sample containers and fire started spreading from the office. According to sources, the fire broke out when the petrol tanker (MH-20-AT-21) was being emptied. There were no customers barring 10-12 people of the pump when the pump was in flames. Sensing the danger, the half empty tanker was immediately driven out of the petrol pump and was parked at a safe distance. Six vehicles including a four-wheeler were also reduced to ashes in the incident.
Fire tenders rush on time
The information of the fire incident was passed on to the fire brigade soon and within 15 minutes three fire tenders reached the spot. They were followed by 3 water tankers also. A team of over 25 firemen extinguished the flames by dousing nearly 150 liters of foam in 45 minutes, said the chief fire officer, Shivaji Jhanjhan.
Major tragedy averted
Jhanjhan said that had the fire engulfed the tanker and underground tank, it could have been the worst tragedy in the history of city. There was a danger of tanker as well as underground tank burst, which could have reduced the area in a periphery of one kilo metre to ashes claiming several lives. All credit goes to Feroz Khan Salim Khan (30, Nagsen Colony) and Mushtaq Builder (30) for showing the presence of mind and taking the tanker out of the fire range before the fire became uncontrollable. Talking to LT, Feroz Khan and Mushtaq Builder said that they weren't concerned to the petrol pump, but were just having cup of tea at a kiosk when the fire broke out. As they were professional drivers, they drove the tanker out of the pump area. The fireballs were seen in the sky and this attracted a massive crowd of onlookers on the spot. A team of policemen from the Kranti Chowk police station headed by PI Prakash Kulkarni reached the spot and dispersed the mob. This made the job of firemen easier. Many senior officers of the police department and corporation apart from public representatives also reached the spot.News-LT
