Suspended Karmad API Y N Shaikh, who is accused of forcing lady police constable (LPC) Sandhya More commit suicide by harassing her sexually, has been remanded in police custody till September 14. API Shaikh and his accomplice head constable Satish Bodle today were produced before a judicial magistrate (FC) Ashok Soni amid tight security. The assistant public prosecutor informed the court that the original suicide note written by Sandhya was yet to be recovered, though its photo copy and her diary was obtained. Similarly, the role of the co-accused Bodle was yet to be confirmed. "The matter is pretty serious and granting them magisterial custody or bail may hamper the process of investigation. Keeping these factors in mind, at least one week's police custody is needed," he contended.
Following this, the court remanded Shaikh and Bodle in four-day police custody. The district and sessions court was thronged by thousands of people. The duo was brought in a police van from Karmad. Moreover, the city police too had deployed adequate force on the court premises. As reported earlier, the newly married lady police constable (LPC) Sandhya Dharma More had ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her rented house in Karmad on Sunday morning following sexual harassment from her senior and PS chief Shaikh. The incident sent shock waves in police circles in the city as well as in the district. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered. Amid mounting pressure from people belonging to all walks of life, the police registered a case against API Shaikh for abetting her suicide. News-LT
The Karmad police station chief, API Y N Shaikh, and head constable S V Bodle were arrested on Monday noon in connection with the suicide of lady police constable Sandhya More. According to officials of the Aurangabad (rural) police, API Shaikh was suspended late Sunday night after he was found prima facie responsible for More's suicide.
During the detailed interrogation it came to light that head constable of the same police station Bodle, helped API Shaikh in sexual harassment of the LPC in the last few weeks. Therefore, Bodle too will be suspended by Tuesday noon. The deputy superintendent of police (Dy SP), Pallavi Barge, said that a case of abetment to suicide, abuse and making indecent gestures has been registered against the duo. They were arrested on Monday noon and will be produced before a city magistrate on Tuesday.
Suicide note recovered
Dy SP Barge on Monday admitted that a two-page detailed suicide note has been recovered. The note drafted in Marathi clearly blames API Shaikh, following which a case was registered against him and his aide Bodle.
About the case
As reported earlier, the newly married lady police constable (LPC), Sandhya Dharma More (24), ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling at her rented house in Karmad on Sunday morning. She was fed up with sexual harassment by her senior and PS chief Shaikh, hence, she took the extreme step. The suicide created ripples and also sent a shock wave in police circles in the city as well as in the district. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered. Buckling under mounting pressure from all walks of life, police authorities registered a case of abetment to suicide against API Shaikh.
A lady police constable (LPC) of the Aurangabad (rural) police, Sandhya Dharma More (21, Karmad), ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house at Karmad near here on Sunday morning allegedly due to sexual harassment by the police station chief API Y N Shaikh. According to sources, the LPC had been facing sexual harassment from the API for the last few weeks and was fed up. Sandhya wrote a suicide note before taking the extreme step sometime between 8 am and 10 am today. She was supposed to go to the police station as she was called by the API for some work. As she did not report to the police station, another lady police constable went to her house. Her colleague was shocked to see Sandhya hanging from the ceiling and informed the police station authorities. Sandhya was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where medical officers declared her dead upon arrival. A case of accidental death has been registered with the Karmad police station. Aurangabad division deputy superintendent of police Pallavi Barge is on the case.
According to details, Sandhya was a native of Dhule and recruited in the Aurangabad (rural) police a couple of years ago. She was posted with the Karmad police station. It has been alleged that she was constantly being harassed by the PS chief. Interestingly, four other LPCs of the same police station had lodged a complaint against the API with the division Dy SP. On probing the matter, she had reprimanded the PS chief. In a suicide note left by her, Sandhya has clearly blamed the API Shaikh for driving her to suicide.
Officials tight-lipped
When contacted for her version, dy SP Pallavi Barge said that the case is at an initial stage and it will be too early to either confirm or deny the harassment charge. Things will become clear only after investigation is over. When asked whether a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against API Shaikh, the Dy SP replied in the negative and said that at present a case of accidental death has been registered.
Final goodbye to father
Sandhya's father Dharma More had come to Karmad last night and stayed at her house as she was given night duty on Saturday night. After completing her duty, she went home in the early hours today and bade a goodbye to her father at 8 am, who then left. After being informed about his daughter's suicide, Dharma, who was proceeding to his hometown Dhule, returned to Aurangabad from midway only to see Sandhya lying motionless on an autopsy table in the mortuary. This scribe tried to speak to Dharma in the mortuary but the grief-stricken man could not utter a single word.
Sandhya More (LPC) Birthday turned doomsday
Unfortunately, it was Sandhya's birthday today, which eventually turned out to be the last day of her life. Sources said that Sandhya was married to an Indian Army Jawan, Sandeep Kadam, a year ago. Sandeep was posted in New Delhi, and she was living alone in a rented room on the first-floor of a building situated in front of Karmad PS. News-LT

It's been a month since the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) established the disaster management cell for monsoon. However, the cell has received very little response. The administration has been blamed for the state of affairs as it did not aggressively publicise the information about the centre.
The cell was set up for taking down complaints of inconvenience due to rainfall on telephone and forwarding them to the section concerned for immediate redressal. Complaints included uprooting of trees, electric poles, blowing of tin roof, damage to vehicles due to fall of trees or twigs, wall caving in and storming of rainwater in house etc. The civic administration transformed the telephone operator's section into the cell. The administration was supposed to stay updated with the messages, orders and warning notices circulated by the Disaster Management Committee and resolve the public complaints relating to rainfall. However, it seems that the citizens are not even aware of the existence of the cell. The landline numbers of cell are 2333536 or 2333540.
In a step that will go a long way in helping women and girls facing harassment, the city police have introduced a helpline with toll free telephone numbers. They can also send emails to the designated IDs. The helpline will remain open 24X7.
Anyone facing sexual harassment, embarrassing situation, nasty comments, lewd gestures or any kind of ignominy on road, at home, workplace, gardens, restaurants, market places and public places can dial up the toll free numbers 1091 and 100 for help. The phone call will be received at the police commissionerate and steps will be taken to provide aid to the caller. Commissioner of police (CP) Sanjay Kumar said the victims or witnesses can also call up 0240-2240500 for contacting him or DCPs Somnath Gharge, Dr Jay Jadhav and Arvind Chavria. They also can send an e-mail to cp.aurangabad@mahapolice.gov.in, or picybercell.abad@mahapolice.gov.in. Citizens have been appealed to be proactive for curbing incidents of eve teasing by shooting the incidents in their mobile phone cams, noting down the registration numbers of vehicles being used by Road Romeos, their description and appearance and informing the police immediately. Moreover, the CP Kumar has warned the city bus conductors, auto rickshaw drivers, hotel and restaurant owners and parents of stringent legal actions, if they remained mute spectators to eve teasing. The helpline and e-mail IDs have been opened from Saturday last, CP Kumar added. Women can call up toll free numbers, send email
